MannionDaniels achieves carbon neutral certification
We are delighted to announce that Mannion Daniels Limited, our UK registered company, has achieved CarbonNeutral® company certification for the period of 1 June 2021 to May 2022.
At MannionDaniels we believe that caring for the environment is part of our work in health and equality. It’s also part of our commitment as a B Corp, which promotes business as a force for social and environmental good.
We have additionally carried out a self-assessment of our carbon emissions for the period January 2020 to May 2021 and put in place measures to ensure the company was also carbon neutral at this time.
We hope that our commitment to be carbon neutral will help other organisations to follow suit. We believe all businesses need to reduce their environmental impact through a combination of in-house efficiency measures and by supporting external emission reduction and sustainability projects.
Why it matters?
We are facing an urgent climate and environment crisis. The world’s climate is changing because the build-up of carbon in our atmosphere is trapping more and more heat. We are headed for a climate catastrophe if we don’t curb carbon emissions and the Earth’s temperatures continue to rise.
We all have a responsibility to protect and enhance the natural world. At MannionDaniels we want to inspire others to act against climate change, for we will only counter the effects of global warming if we work together. We are committed to achieving the agreements made under the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius through reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and offsetting unavoidable emissions.
Later this year the UK will host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow. The COP26 summit will bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. At MannionDaniels we have achieved CarbonNeutral® company certification ahead of COP26 to demonstrate our strong commitment to climate change action.
What does carbon neutral mean?
Everything you do that produces carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) - from driving, to powering your home - makes up your carbon footprint.
Being "carbon neutral" means that the net greenhouse gas emissions associated with a company, service or product are zero during a specific timeframe. In other words, there is no net increase in carbon in the atmosphere. This is normally due to emissions being offset through carbon reduction projects or the long-term removal or capture of carbon.
It’s important to follow best practice when calculating carbon footprints and making carbon neutral claims. At MannionDaniels we offset our emissions to the highest standards under The CarbonNeutral Protocol (including scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions). This means including everything we possibly can in our carbon emission calculation, such as staff commutes, hotel stays, and much more. Beyond calculating and offsetting our unavoidable emissions, reducing avoidable carbon emissions is a vital part of carbon neutrality. We plan to make direct reductions year-on-year to help achieve net zero emissions, a state when the small amount of carbon we continue to emit is removed from the atmosphere.
Offsetting investments
When offsetting unavoidable carbon emissions, there are two types of carbon offsetting projects to choose from:
- Ones that look to reduce emissions, such as renewable energy facilities or protecting standing forests. This means supporting technologies or approaches which will help to reduce carbon emissions.
- Those that take existing carbon out of the atmosphere, such as the planting of trees. These help to reduce the current level of carbon in our environment.
For the period June 2021 to May 2022, we are supporting an emission reduction project focusing on Community Reforestation in Kenya to offset our emissions and achieve carbon neutral status.
